FAQs

What does STEPi stand for?

STEPi stands for Squaring the Education Pyramid Institute. Our manifesto is inspired by the concept of our founder, Paul H. Sutherland, to "square the pyramid." When we are born, we do not choose our parents nor the location of where we are born. Beginning in early childhood, there are kids and families who already have more privilege and access than others, those who live in a world of choices. Society spends significantly more resources on those who reach the top of the pyramid, on higher education and an elite workforce. At STEPi, we believe it's time to create an inclusive education system based on the science of brain development, early childhood studies, and the science behind positive education, positive psychology, and social emotional intelligences.

What does STEPi do?

STEPi seeks to create and promote tools such as children's books, workshops, publications, toys, videos, and other resources for parents, teachers, caregivers, leaders, activists, or any curious individual so we can help create just and healthy societies, communities, families, and environments.

Is STEPi a publishing company?

No. Our founder, Paul H. Sutherland, has been inspired by his years living around the world to tell stories that speak to the realities of all kids, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, or ability. We seek illustrators and designers who are local to the communities where we work, and we print locally in every region and/or country where we work. Our main goal is not publishing books, but rather creating resources that will inspire and empower young kids, parents, teachers, caregivers or any reader.

Where can I purchase STEPi books?

You can find our books available for purchase on Amazon, through enjuba, a local organization in Uganda that supports early childhood education, literacy, and teacher training, or contact us directly.

How is STEPi funded?

STEPi is a program under the umbrella of Utopia Foundation. For more information, please visit the Utopia Foundation here.
