Sharon's Song: A tool for conflict resolution

We love to see the impact that STEPi books have on reader’s lives - not just in the way that they think, read, and learn, but how they relate to those around them. Books are able to shape a child’s worldview in numerous ways, and stories heal. There's something magical about the moment a child sees their own struggles reflected in the pages of a book. It's in that recognition, that spark of understanding, where real transformation begins.

Our Training & Literacy Director Pumeza Macingwane was able to witness one such example when she conducted a meaningful day-long Winter Holiday Program event in partnership with Little Jerusalem Day Care Centre in Phumlamqashi. The Winter Program hosted children from various ages (from as young as 7 years old, up to the age of 16 years old), various backgrounds, including those visiting for the school holidays, providing a safe haven to learn, connect and engage in reading activities. The collaboration was made possible through the involvement of Principal Thandi Pitso, who runs the centre.

The program also fostered positive bonding between the 60 children in attendance, even leading to conflict resolution inspired by the STEPi book “Sharon’s Song”. A group of the children in attendance, who had been experiencing bullying, were able to mediate the issues that they faced with their bullies, using the book to mend their relationship.

“Sharon’s Song” tells the story of a young girl named Sharon, who loves to sing. Her family surrounds her with love, support and encouragement. When Sharon meets a quiet girl at school who has nothing, Sharon must learn how to use her voice to lift up another. By extending love and support to her new friend, Sharon is able to help her overcome adversity. This journey of friendship and discovery teaches children about important, sometimes difficult, life matters in a fun and captivating way.

Tangible change is being created in the day-to-day lives of our young readers, one STEPi book at a time.
